Friends of ours had also been studying the 1800s with their History group, although they went a little farther than we did. For their culminating event, they hosted a 19th Century Country Fair in their backyard. It was awesome!
They had all kind of traditional games and contests. People were even encouraged to bring baked goods that we all voted for winners from. Not many places will do real apple bobbing, but at this fair it was on.
There was even a Spelling Bee and a Trivia contest.
What kind of fair doesn't have a three-legged race?
Or human wheelbarrows?
And no fair is complete without tug-of-war.
Lastly, the kids from their History group put on a play of scenes from Tom Sawyer. They made the scenes, costumes, and props. They all did a great job too! It was clear that all the kids and parents put a lot of thought, time and effort into their Country Fair and we all benefited from it. It was a great afternoon!
